Crystalline Silica
Substances (CSS)
CSS refers to anything containing >1% crystalline silica. Under the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Amendment (CSS) Regulation 2024, workers are required to follow strict procedures to protect themselves from respirable crystalline silica (RCS).
Managing Exposure and Ensuring Worker Safety
Crystalline silica dust is hazardous and can be found in many materials, such as stone, soil and sand. They can be found in other everyday materials, such as glass manufacturing raw materials, bricks, tiles or concrete. Exposure to CSS in the form of RCS can lead to irreversible lung diseases known as silicosis.
It’s important to recognise and treat materials that have more than 1% of crystalline silica as a CSS. Failure to do so may lead to immediate work stoppage and cause significant project delays.
